How Long Do Negative Credit Items Appear On My Credit Report

Bankruptcy will appear on your credit report for up to 10 years past the discharge date.

Inquiries remain for 2 years.

Negative payment information, including late-payments, collections, liens and judgments can stay up to 7 years. Prior to 1998 the 7 years starts with last activity date. If you pay on a credit account, that counts as activity on your credit file, so if you pay on a 3 year old collection account, you need to wait 7 years from that payment date.

After 1998, the time starts no more than 180 days after your first delinquency, if delinquent continuously. If you are late only once in a while, you keep starting over.

Unpaid Tax Liens up to 15 years.

If the alotted time has passed and there is still one of these negative credit items on your credit report, you will need to write to the credit bureau(s) and ask for it to be removed.

Satisfied Judgements/Liens - the lien holder must file a Satisfaction of Judgement with the court.
